1. Identify which social network will work for you…

Not every social network is created equally and not every network will work equally for your business. Whilst every business should have a Facebook business page. Some other social networks, such as Pinterest only work for businesses within specific niche industries or for targeting specific audience demographics.

Make sure you know where your audience visits when they are online before you sign up.

2. Setting up your profiles…

Once you’ve determined which social networks you want to use it is time to get yourself set up and ready to go. Make sure you are consistent in your appearance on social media, using the same display pictures, cover photos, and usernames can make a huge difference between people finding and recognizing your brand and not.

Being easily recognizable is vital to being successful in the social media area and if your customers and pick you out of the crowd with something easily recognizable across multiple platforms then you will be the company they choose to do business with.

So it is worth taking the time to check the username you want is available and that your brand is easily recognizable and consistent.

3. Post some content/create a content schedule…

So you’re all set up, your page is branded up consistently across all the networks. You are ready to get to work and start posting. It is at this stage too many people fail to launch their social media efforts expecting the result to fly in from their very first post.

You need to nurture your online presence in order for it to grow. You need to create and curate regular content to bring in those prospective customers and build that relationship with them before you will start to see social media generate results.

A great way to do this is to put together a content calendar that outlines what you are going to post and when, just don’t forget to stick to it!

Whatever you post don’t be all sell all the time. Lots of businesses use their social media like their own personal billboard and these are the same companies that are surprised when they lose followers and that nobody is taking actions from their social media channels.

4. Build a relationship…

Treat social media like you are on the first date with your customer, you are both trying to find out more about each other before you decide if you are looking for something more serious i.e. a sale.

Take the time to build a relationship with your customers. Nobody builds a relationship with a physical store, it is the people that run the business that they build trust with and eventually make purchases from. For extra credit, if you can create content that has value for them then you are onto a winning content strategy.

So what are you waiting for, go out into the great social networking world and get started! It’s free and you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
